15th August

1872 At 4:50 a.m., a third son, Aurobindo, was born to Dr. Krishna Dhan Ghose of the distinguished Ghose family of Konnagar, Bengal, and his wife, Swarnalata, at the house of Barrister Mono Mohan Ghose, Theatre Road, Calcutta.
1906 Sri Aurobindo took up the position of Principal of the Bengal National College; he was now free to give his whole time to the service of the country. He said later: "When we established this college and left other occupations, other chances of life, to devote our lives to this institution, we did so because we hoped to see in it the foundation, the nucleus of the nation, of the new India."
1910 Sri Aurobindo spent his first birthday in Pondicherry. At the time he was staying with a few associates in what is now Raghaven House in St. Louis Street. For the occasion he sat in a chair on the outer verandah of the house and the well-wishers passed by in front of him, one by one.
1914 The 'Arya', a monthly review of pure philosophy was published for the first time from 7, rue Dupleix, Pondicherry, where the Mother was staying. In this first issue, Sri Aurobindo started three of his major works simultaneously, 'The Life Divine', 'On the Veda' and 'The Synthesis of Yoga'.
1946 Book One (The Book of Beginnings), Canto One (The Symbol Dawn) of Sri Aurobindo's epic poem 'Savitri' was published for the first time in the Sri Aurobindo Mandir Annual. The first complete edition of 'Savitri', 23,813 lines of blank verse, appeared in two volumes in 1950.
1947 India proclaimed its independence. Sri Aurobindo, on this birthday of free India, which was also his own birthday, made several prophecies, which he called 'dreams'.
"The first of these dreams... the partition must go... the division must go; unity must and will be achieved, for it is necessary for the greatness of India's future.
"Another dream was for the resurgence and liberation of the peoples of Asia and her return to her great role in the progress of human civilisation...
"The third dream was a world-union... A new spirit of oneness will take hold of the human race.
"Another dream, the spiritual gift of India to the world, has already begun. India's spirituality is entering Europe and America in an ever-increasing measure. That movement will grow...
"The final dream was a step in evolution which would raise man to a higher and larger consciousness..."
