Should we get rid of the antiquated first-past-the-post electoral system and embrace a form of proportional representation?

Vox Nova Thursday, July 12, 2007 Is it the Electoral System? By Morning's Minion

Much of the animosity in US Catholic circles in the US stems from the fact that neither of the two big parties provides a comfortable home for Catholics. And maybe this is the problem. There are too few choices. Here's a radical suggestion. Should we get rid of the antiquated first-past-the-post electoral system and embrace a form of proportional representation? There are many forms of proportional representation, but they all try to align the percent of votes cast for a particular party with the percent of seats in parliament. Proportional systems tend to throw up many parties, often of different hues and temperaments, while majoritarian systems typically lead to two-party systems. Would such a reform in the US allow for a Catholic party to be formed? Would it be beneficial? Why or why not? Posted by Morning's Minion at 7:00 PM Labels: , Comments (9) Trackback
